16S rRNA gene-based identification of bacteria in postoperative endophthalmitis by PCR- Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) fingerprinting BJM
Navarro-Noya,Yendi; Hernández-Rodríguez,César; Zenteno,Juan C; Buentello-Volante,Beatriz; Cancino-Díaz,Mario E; Jan-Roblero,Janet; Cancino-Díaz,Juan C.
Conventional microbiological culture techniques are frequently insufficient to confirm endophthalmitis clinical cases which could require urgent medical attention because it could lead to permanent vision loss. We are proposing PCR-DGGE and 16S rRNA gene libraries as an alternative to improve the detection and identification rate of bacterial species from endophthalmitis cases.

Antibiofilm activity of Cobetia marina filtrate upon Staphylococcus epidermidis catheter-related isolates BJM
Trentin,D.S; Gorziza,D. F; Abraham,W.R; Antunes,A.L.S; Lerner,C; Mothes,B; Termignoni,C; Macedo,A.J.
We report the antibiofilm activity by the sponge-associated bacterium Cobetia marina upon Staphylococcus epidermidis clinical isolates obtained from central venous catheters. Antibiofilm activity/antimicrobial susceptibility correlation might predict the action of the metabolite(s) upon Staphylococcus epidermidis in the clinic, making it a possible adjuvant in therapies against biofilm-associated infections.

Conjunctival microbial flora of clinically normal persons who work in a hospital environment BJM
Trindade,Rita de Cássia; Bonfim,Ana Cristina Rocha; Resende,Maria Aparecida.
The objective of the work was to study the microbiota of the conjunctival secretion of health professionals. Samples were collected from the clinically normal eyes of 40 health professionals in four different sectors, Proctology, General Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Male Ward, and Oncology of Hospital das Clínicas Dr. Augusto Leite, Aracaju, SE, Brazil. Ten professionals from each sector were selected. The samples were inoculated into various culture media: blood agar, Chapman agar, EMB medium (Teague), and Sabouraud dextrose agar with chloramphenicol. The bacteria most frequently isolated from all the sectors were Staphylococcus epidermidis (45.0%) and Bacillus sp (29.0%). The least frequent bacteria were Proteus sp (6.1%), Staphylococcus aureus (4.1%),...

Hospital strain colonization by Staphylococcus epidermidis BJMBR
Blum-Menezes,D.; Bratfich,O.J.; Padoveze,M.C.; Moretti,M.L..
The skin and mucous membranes of healthy subjects are colonized by strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis showing a high diversity of genomic DNA polymorphisms. Prolonged hospitalization and the use of invasive procedures promote changes in the microbiota with subsequent colonization by hospital strains. We report here a patient with prolonged hospitalization due to chronic pancreatitis who was treated with multiple antibiotics, invasive procedures and abdominal surgery. We studied the dynamics of skin colonization by S. epidermidis leading to the development of catheter-related infections and compared the genotypic profile of clinical and microbiota strains by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. During hospitalization, the normal S. epidermidis skin...

Isolation of Staphylococcus epidermidis from inflamed upper respiratory tract of an orange-spined hairy dwarf porcupine (Sphiggurus villosus) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Fornazari,F; Guimarães,FF; Teixeira,CR; Langoni,H.
The orange-spined hairy dwarf porcupine (Sphiggurus villosus) is a rodent species common in most parts of South America, and little is known about the pathologies that can afflict it. A specimen was delivered at the Wildlife Research and Medical Center (CEMPAS), School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, UNESP, Botucatu, SP, Brazil. The animal showed intense apathy, with purulent secretion in the nasal cavity and fracture of the lumbar spine. Due to the unfavorable prognosis, the porcupine was euthanized and microbiological culture of nasal discharge showed Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antimicrobial resistance test revealed sensitivity to all tested antimicrobials (ampicillin, oxacillin, tetracycline, penicillin G, neomycin, cephalexin,...

Multi drug resistance in strong biofilm forming clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis BJM
Sahal,Gulcan; Bilkay,Isil Seyis.
Staphylococcus epidermidis which exists in healthy human skin as a commensal inhabitant is also an important pathogen forming biofilms on many surfaces and recently, increased resistance traits were suggested to be acquired in biofilm environments. In this study; clinical Prevalences, antibiotic resistances and biofilm formations of S. epidermidis strains were determined and comparison of all these findings with each other was carried out in order to take precautions against them and figure out if high biofilm forming S. epidermidis strains display multi drug resistance. According to our results; samples of wound and blood were the most S. epidermidis isolated clinical materials (40%; 35%) and cardiothoracic surgery was the most S. epidermidis observed...

Pathogenic factors and antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus epidermidis associated with nosocomial infections occurring in intensive care units BJM
Michelim,Lessandra; Lahude,Michele; Araújo,Patricia R.; Giovanaz,Dirce S. H.; Müller,Gabriela; Delamare,Ana P.L.; Costa,Sérgio Olavo Pinto da; Echeverrigaray,Sérgio.
Nosocomial infections constitute an important problem in hospitals, intensive care units (ICU) having the highest incidence of this type of infection. Staphylococci, especially Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus, are among the most important microorganisms associated with nosocomial infections. S. epidermidis is a common skin resident, and can be introduced into the clinical environment by patients and hospital staff. The situation in hospitals is aggravated by the emergence of multiresistant strains. We evaluated 98 hospital S. epidermidis isolates collected at neonatal, pediatric and adult ICUs and 20 S. epidermidis control skin resident isolates from healthy volunteers, for resistance to ten antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents, and...
